Film Industry

The film industry consists of the technological and commercial institutions of filmmaking: i.e. film production companies, film studios, cinematography, film production, screenwriting, pre-production, postproduction, film festivals, distribution, actors, film directors and other film personnel. Though the expense involved in making movies almost immediately led film production to concentrate under the auspices of standing production companies, advances in affordable film making equipment, and the expansion of opportunities to acquire investment capital from outside the film industry itself, allow independent film production to thrive. Al Christie for David Horsley founded the first movie studio in the Hollywood area, Nestor Studios, in 1911 in an old building on the northwest corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street. In the same year, another fifteen independents settled in Hollywood. Hollywood became strongly associated with the film industry so much so that the word "Hollywood" referred to the entire industry. In 1913, Cecil B. DeMille, in association with Jesse Lasky, leased a barn with studio facilities on the southeast corner of Selma and Vine Streets from the Burns and Revier Studio and Laboratory, which they established there. DeMille then began production of The Squaw Man (1914). The building became the Lasky-DeMille Barn and is now the location of the Hollywood Heritage Museum. In 1917, the Charlie Chaplin Studios, located on the northeast corner of La Brea and De Longpre Avenues just south of Sunset Boulevard, became popular. It has had many owners since 1953, including Kling Studios, which housed production for the Superman TV series with George Reeves; Red Skelton, who used the sound stages for his CBS TV variety show; and CBS, who filmed the TV series Perry Mason with Raymond Burr there. A&M Records belonging to Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass Enterprises have also owned it. It is currently The Jim Henson Company, home of the Muppets. In 1969, The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Board named the studio a historical cultural monument. The United States has the oldest film industry, and Los Angeles, California, is the primary nexus of the U.S. film industry.

Addiction Treatment Medication

Drug addiction treatment can include medications, behavioral therapies or a combination thereof. Treatment medications, such as methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone, may help individuals addicted to opioids. Doctors prescribe nicotine preparations like patches, gum, lozenges and nasal spray and the medications varenicline and bupropion for individuals addicted to tobacco. Disulfiram, acamprosate, naltrexone and topiramate treat alcohol dependence, which commonly occurs with other drug addictions. In fact, most people with severe addiction are user many kinds of drugs and require treatment for all substances abused. Psychoactive medications, such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, mood stabilizers and antipsychotic medications, may help patients have mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders including post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and a drug addiction problem.

Mind Body Medicine

Mind body practices focus on the interactions among the brain, mind, body and behavior, with the intent to use the mind to affect physical functioning and promote health. Many complementary medicine practices embody this concept in different ways.
Meditation techniques include specific postures, focused attention or an open attitude toward distractions. People use meditation to increase calmness and relaxation, improve psychological balance, cope with illness or enhance overall health and wellbeing. Various styles of yoga used for health purposes typically combine physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation or relaxation. People use yoga as part of a general health regimen and for a variety of health conditions.
Acupuncture is a family of procedures involving the stimulation of specific points on the body using a variety of techniques, such as penetrating the skin with needles that an administrator then manipulates by hand or by electrical stimulation. Acupuncture is one of the key components of traditional Chinese medicine and is among the oldest healing practices in the world. Acupuncture is part of mind body medicine, but it is also a component of energy medicine, manipulative and practices based on the body and traditional Chinese medicine.
Other examples of mind body practices include deep breathing exercises, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, progressive relaxation, qi gong and tai chi.
Several mind body approaches ranked among the top 10 complementary medicine practices reported by adults in the 2007 NHIS. For example, the survey found that 12.7 percent of adults had used deep breathing exercises, 9.4 percent had practiced meditation and 6.1 percent had practiced yoga. The use of these three complementary medicine practices had increased significantly since the previous 2002 NHIS. Progressive relaxation and guided imagery were also among the top 10 complementary medicine therapies for adults; deep breathing and yoga ranked high among children. Acupuncture had been used by 1.4 percent of adults and 0.2 percent of children.
